How to Install a Drop-In Handguard

Drop-in handguards are a great starting upgrade for more basic AR15 type firearms utilizing an existing 2-piece handguard system! They can provide improved ergonomics and mounting capabilities with a simple swap of parts. In this video we will be showing you how to install a two piece drop-in handguard for an AR15.

When purchasing a drop-in two-piece handguard, you will want to find one that is compatible with your upper receiver. To determine this, you will need to identify the length of the handguard needed, as well as what type of end cap is currently installed. The length of handguard requires is usually determined by the gas system length unless being used on a dissipator type upper receiver.

Before performing any work on your firearm, ensure it is completely unloaded with no magazine inserted.

Once the firearm is clear, you will start by pulling down on the delta ring located at the rear of your existing handguard. This can require a little bit of force in some instances as the delta ring is under continuous spring pressure. A way to help overcome this is by bracing the rear of the firearm on a bench or other rigid surface. Once the delta ring is fully depressed, you can freely remove the two handguard pieces by pulling on the rear of each piece and pivoting them out of the handguard end cap.

To install your new handguard, simply repeat the previous process in reverse. Depress the delta ring and insert each piece by first engaging with the end cap and pivoting into place. Do note that some handguards will require one of the two pieces to be installed first.

To ensure proper instillation, check to make sure that the delta ring is fully retaining the handguard at the end cap, and delta ring. The delta ring should appear fully extended and be covering the tabs located at the rear of your drop in handguard.
